Mother Julian - Mother Julian EP (Mother Julian)

Here is some information about the group from founder Max Markus:

"We are a free improvisation ensemble whose music creates an eerie and ethereal sound. Our music is instrumental. I formed Mother Julian last year with Ro Lafferty (guitar/ mandolin), María J. López (flute), Alice McArthur (oboe), Max McWhirter (piano), Joanna Stark (cello) and we made our debut self titled EP was recorded. I recorded each musician individually and mixed their performances together afterwards. These recordings were taken with a TC-92 Sony cassette recorder. The story behind the EP was the journey of snow from the sky to the ocean. Each track represented a different stage of this journey. The performances on the EP were improvisational responses to this story. It so happened that Joanna on cello was recorded first and everyone else used her performance as a guide track. This meant they took their cues from the mood and feeling she created. The sound of Mother Julian has evolved through rehearsals (as we refer to them "demo sessions") in preparation for our first public performance. At these sessions the members of Mother Julian played around with the sound they created for the EP. We intend to continually evolve our sound and not be restricted by any one one genre, which is why we are a "free improvisation ensemble".
