Glasgow-based indie label Double A-Side Records proudly present their first compilation release, Play It Like A Woman, released digitally and on purple coloured vinyl on International Women’s Day - Fri 8 March. It’s a diverse compilation that champions a group of fantastic female artists based in or with a connection to Scotland, across 10 tracks that soar and roar with innovation, emotion, melody and power.

Opening with art-pop quintet Hairband’s playful ‘Sassy Moon’, Play It Like A Woman takes the listener on a thrillingly eclectic journey. Amongst the quality on show is the prolific singer-songwriter and TeenCanteen frontwoman Carla J. Easton, whose joyous, triumphant and theatrical ‘Girl From Before’ sits alongside the formidable punk of Curdle’s ‘Give Me Your Phone Number’, a defiant middle finger to sexist hecklers.
Martha Ffion’s ‘Fall Apart’ offers a glimpse at the singer-songwriter’s next artistic move, leaving behind the 60s pop influence of her SAY Award nominated Sunday Best for a minimal slice of pop that bears the influence of Jeff Buckley and Broadcast. A favourite of, and collaborator with, Mercury Prize winners Young Fathers, Law Holt’s ‘Hustle’ packs multiple hooks into a slab of twisted electronica that begs us ‘don’t despair’. The compilation closes with a wistful dream of track from Jo Foster, ‘Sometimes You Get Stronger (Sometimes You Get Lost)’, evoking Martha Wainwright, and lingering long in the memory in its own right.

Play It Like A Woman features contributions from Hairband, Law Holt, Lunir, Martha Ffion, L-space, Curdle, Life Model, Lou Mclean, Carla J. Easton and Jo Foster. The compilation is launched with an all-dayer at Glasgow venue The Glad Cafe on Sat 9 March, with acts from the record and friends of the label set to perform. All proceeds from the compilation and launch gig go towards Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis.
